Cadet discipline files. 1920-1924, 1919-1921.

The Cadet Discipline Committee functioned between circa 1902-1950. According to the By-Laws of the Board of Trustees of the Clemson Agriculture College, 1909 (page 19), the Cadet Discipline Committee consisted of the President of the College, the directors of departments, and the full professors. The committee heard unusual, serious offenses while ordinary discipline matters were taken before the Commandant of Cadets. The scope of offenses heard before the Committee was specified, for example, in the Clemson Agriculture College Cadet Regulations (1819): "Any cadet who shall disobey a command of the President, the Commandant or his officers, or a member of the faculty, or shall behave himself in a refractory or disrespectful manner" (page 28) would be tried before the Committee. In 1920, the composition of the Committee was changed to consist of directors of the college departments and two professors nominated by the President and approved by the Board of Trustees. that same year, after the student walk-out trials, sessions of the Committee were required to be open to the public. In 1929, the Senior Council was formed which could hear grievances of cadets and mediate with the President. This Discipline Committee continued to function until the 1950's. The Cadet Discipline Committee files consist primarily of typescript transcripts of cadets before the Committee. There are occasionally correspondence, newspaper clippings, and related material connected with the cases. The files also contain signed forms reaffirming conformity with College discipline, reports, and other material related to the cadet walk-outs of 1908, 1920, and 1924. There is one folder of file cards related to the case of an unidentified graduate student/instructor, no date. The files are arranged by year and thereafter alphabetically by the last name of the cadets.
